I began my career as a professional musician. I've played classical and Irish traditional styles on flutes and whistles, and now try my best at the piano & viola. I was in several bands and orchestras, including:
- Columbus Symphony Orchestra
- United States Army Europe Band & Chorus
- United States Air Force Band of the Golden West
While in Columbus, GA, I performed with Peter Nero, Beverly Wolf, Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr. In Europe in the Army, I was a featured soloist many times before heads of state including President Reagan and Queen Elizabeth II of England. As a free-lance musician in the San Francisco Bay area, I taught at the Community Music Center. I have also worked at and now volunteer on the board at the Washington Conservatory of Music. Check us out, we're in a beautiful national park!
Some recordings of me on flute are on YouTube and here is some music on SoundCloud (compositions, favorites) I've thrown together over the years.
Speaking of over the years, curiosity and various job-related tasks led me to explore computers more and more. Eventually I grew enthusiastic enough to land a job as a report writer. This led to agile software development at the Smithsonian. In becoming a programmer, I realized how similar it is to playing in an ensemble.
Recently, I sought out Thinkful and Kadenze to hone my skills further and also delve into the creative side of coding. Check out my interactive, generative art projects. Have fun!
